Yesterday's Winner and Contest #2

So you might think that Chris, my fiance, had an advantage in answering correctly yesterday. Tensor Fascia Latae is the muscle that tightens and pulls on the IT band. However, he simply did a few searches on Google and came up with it on his own. Instead of the gift card, I'm sure he'll enjoy a homemade organic steak dinner....

So, for Question #2 and the Nutrition Action subscription.....

If you were in charge of fixing America's nutrition/food problems, what would be your most creative idea OR first problem tackled and how? Be somewhat brief.

Points for creativity, humor, or just a really good idea.... Answer by 9 PM tonight!

  1. I think the biggest impact you can have on your own diet and the food industry is to shop local as much as possible. This isn't a new idea, but it's a good one b/c it has multiple effects...economic stimulus to smaller businesses, less carbon impact through shorter shipping lines, fresher food for your diet, and eating foods that are in season. Too many sources of American's diets are from large processing plants, which in my opinion is a huge negative for anyone's diet. Shop local!

I think it's important for our government to start regulating the marketing of food, nutrition and healthy companies -- especially for children. As we know, healthy (or unhealthy) habits start young, and children are especially susceptible to marketing. Also, as a society we understand that we NEED to protect our children until they're old enough to make good decisions on their own. So if we can protect them from the advertising predators at cigarette companies, we should be able to protect them from the chowhounds at McDonald's (or, as I like to call it, McFat-olds).

  3. I'd tackle obesity first by wiring everyone's jaw shut. Ha ha. Just kidding. I would work to ensure that grade and high schools had a solid nutrition program so that kids could learn about how and what to eat early on. I would also try to get low-income families more help in buying fresh local foods.
